Zihui’s paper on shifting pest pressure in North American forests, just out in Nature Ecology and Evolution: Spatially explicit forecasts of tree insect and disease incidence across North American forests under future climate scenarios. Here, using data collected from >1 million individual trees, he shows that more than 80% of North American forests could face greater threats from pests and diseases by mid-century if global emissions continue unchecked. This paper has been getting lots of media attention in Canada (Global News and CTV coverage), where future threats are predicted to be most intense. I was surprised to see how much resistance this paper received during the review process. Results were bullet proof and based on masses of data. What was I missing?
